Spam πŸ– Annoying Comment πŸ˜

I’m starting to get and be spam from few days back. Spam is a brand of canned cooked… Sorry, wrong spam. Here we go – irrelevant or inappropriate messages sent on the Internet to a large number of recipients. But reality? Not so much, maybe because that description is referred to spam in general, but I’m going to talk about spam specifically for this platform, spam comment in my site or others.

When I tried to comment on my favorite blog, I can’t seem to add any comment, she said “Yuulye where did your comment vanish?”, and then I tried to add another comment, 2 or 3 times after that still no success, after a while I tried again and this time it worked! A few days passed she told me that my comments considered as spam by the system and she approved all of those! *annoyed*

Another case, I ask my friend to read my newest post, she seems insensitive until I need to ask (but she is cute). Well, she did visit my blog to read the post and then she commented, but I don’t get any notification. I tried asking her, “why didn’t you leave a comment?” “I did” she replied and I told her that there is no comment from her *sadface*.

I was thinking, my brain? I was wondering. A day later I saw her comment detected as spam. Why didn’t I check it before, I guess it needs two incidents to make me realize! After that I periodically try to check spam comment or comments for my site in general. But I still don’t know why some comments detected as spam.

Investigation

I search for this problem, I found a resource from WordPress.com support post titled Unwanted Comments and Comment Spam, there is a point in the article that says…

Are your comments incorrectly marked as spam? Please contact Akismet support and mention that Akismet is catching your comments by mistake.

So I went to the link…

⚠️ Want to get help even faster? Don’t forget that our Plus subscription includes priority email and chat support.

Okay, no thanks! Well it’s not really that important, really small number of comments that considered as spam and I can manually check it on the spam comment section. Boring? Let’s find something interesting.

But before that, additional info that your site using Akismet or not you can go to wp-admin, comment menu, spam list, if you have a spam, try checking the History. In the comment history you can see what happen to that comment.

akismet

There it is, my investigation, doesn’t really have any good outcome, but whatever…

Why it’s called Spam?

While some have suggested that this was because SPAM (as in the Hormel meat product) is sometimes satirized as β€œfake meat”, thus spam messages are β€œfake messages”, this potential origin, while plausible enough on the surface, turns out to be not correct at all.

The real origin of the term comes from a 1970 Monty Python’s Flying Circus skit. In this skit, all the restaurant’s menu items devolve into SPAM. When the waitress repeats the word SPAM, a group of Vikings in the corner sing β€œSPAM, SPAM, SPAM, SPAM, SPAM, SPAM, SPAM, SPAM, lovely SPAM! Wonderful SPAM!”, drowning out other conversation, until they are finally told to shut it.

For short, I decided to understand spam as annoying message, in this post case unwanted comment. I’m bored, sorry if this is not as interesting as I expected…

My Question

I recently had some blogger awards, and for some of those I need to ask questions, one of my question is “What does comment mean to you?”. I cringe myself for asking that question when I read the answers. So now I’ll try to answer the question myself.

For me, comment section is a tool, a tool provided by WordPress to do something powerful, as powerful as a post, I believe. The platform also give me a hint! I just didn’t understand it soon enough…

comment-hint

But as always, I often make mistakes with this, sometimes I didn’t read the post but rushing to give a comment just by seeing the title and the comment turns out to be hurtful, inappropriate or irrelevant. Then I found a way to change that, of course to read the post before comment and the other one is be mindful. The poem from Winnie is super good!

Annoying

I actually didn’t get annoyed so easily, probably because the years I’ve spent living, but I have to make an exception.*wink* I just make the title a little bit dramatic to attract more readers, hahaha, sorry. Is the title click-bait enough?

So for you the one who accidentally read this post, don’t worry if you have anything to say to me or the blog, say it on any comment section, I would be very happy to receive it, and if your comment doesn’t appear in the place it supposed to be you can blame the Akismet not me, don’t bully me, I’m really a sensitive person…

    1. Yes, there are some settings to discussion or comment, the one that considered as spam will not appear in any notification if I’m not mistaken, for me I disabled all email notifications so I’m not sure if there is any notification for spam

You probably need a new device for that, I think the problem is in your device or internet connection for the send button problem

      2. Oh yeah, the non blablabla.wordpress.com ones, I guess it’s because it’s not hosted in wordpress server (self hosted) or upgraded site, migration problem probably.
I hope your devices is still in good performance, sorry for the joke earlier

Couldn’t agree more, I’ll tell you a secret, when I like a post, it doesn’t mean I’ve read the post, I just wanted the person to notice that I’ve interacted with it…

    1. Thank you so much 😁
I just experienced this, maybe because of the “traffic” getting bigger.
By the way, some times when I tried to comment on your posts, it’s like impossible to do it from wordpress reader, I need to open the link and make a comment from there…

  6. Kind of you to share this post, Yuulye. I will check my Spam folder to see if Akismet is hiding any of your comments on my posts, cause I don’t think they are visible.
Has the comments of the goddess Choco ever entered into your Spam folder?

      1. Well, of course I read them. I don’t just read a title and move on. If I go to someone’s blog, that means I’m going to read what they write. Otherwise, why bother?

  9. Lately, Akismet is acting strange. Some legitimate comments are marked as spam while some obviously spam comments pass through its filter undetected. That’s the reason I turned on comment moderation.

Anyway, I receive around 50 spam comments per day so it’s difficult for me to find the real comments that were mixed up with the spams…

    1. What is your Akismet and WordPress plan? It seems that you have a really big traffic and numbers for your site.
I think that Akismet is working stable for mine, just really small number on spam.
Thank you so much for the comment 😁

      1. Mine is Personal Plan and I use the free version of Akismet. The majority of my traffic comes from search engine. So, I think that’s why I have been getting the attention of those unsavory people…

      2. Did you do upgrade? If you did is it messing with the blog properties – like, comment, follow, links? I’m wanting to upgrade probably in the future.
That’s so awesome. I tried to grow blog based for search engine but it always stuck discontinue.
I usually approved the unsavory people comment for my post with low number of comment πŸ˜‚

  10. I learned stuff today, and you didn’t even mention the real spam that is so cleverly worded that you think it is a real comment. I better check up on the possible spam being held, just in case it is from someone.
