The Spam Trilogy: πŸ’¬ Comment, πŸ‘ Like & πŸ“‘ Follow

After writing a little about Comment and Like, this is the last part of the trilogy I was thinking from the beginning, wasn’t I? First, let me describe what trilogy means because this is not an everyday word, I think.

Trilogy

A group or series of three related things. The first time I used this term is when I know about front-end web development technologies which are HTML, CSS, JavaScript. Okay, that is not for everyone let’s find another. What about movies? The Dark Knight Trilogy (Batman Begins (2005), The Dark Knight (2008), The Dark Knight Rises (2012)), The Godfather Trilogy (I watched only two movies, I don’t really understand them), Toy Stories, Spider-Mans, etc.

Metallica’s The Unforgiven songs: The Unforgiven, The Unforgiven II, The Unforgiven III, and I think there are many more trilogies out there. Why trilogy? Because some things are just too big for one, they can be four, five, and so on. I like to make this post as one of my trilogy posts.

My previous posts are Spam πŸ– Annoying Comment 😠 for comment and Seollenda me likey ⭐ Me likey likey likey ⭐ Me likey likey likey ⭐ Dugeundugeundugeun ❀❀ for Like. Those posts are based on my own experience from blogging in WordPress.com. Just like the title, it’s more about spam I’ve done with those three tools.

The Three Tools

How I make the Comment, Like and Follow as one trilogy? Other than main components of blogging in this platform (post, site, title, description, etc.), I consider them as a group of tools to get readers for my content. You can also see if you use notification. There are five items actually: All, Unread, Comments, Follows, Likes. I can’t include All, and Unread is for the post – You’re all caught up! Reignite the conversation: write a new post. And that leaves me with the three.

Comment is the most used tool for spamming in my opinion. I can also give you fact that this blog has more than 50 spam comments right this time when I write this post. From what I know, the spammer wanted to gain traffic for their online content by spreading their links so that their site or blog get sources of referrals.

Like, the difference between Comment and Like as spam tools is Like need to be an insider, while Comment can be done by the outsider. Insider here is WordPress.com user and outsider is an online content owner (doesn’t need a WordPress.com account).

Spammer Limit

WordPress.com is a really great blogging platform. They are limiting the numbers for likes, comments and even follows. I know this because I’ve done those things. When I like about 100 posts in an hour I can’t like another in that hour. When I comment on many blogs my comments are considered as spam. Follow is like Like, there is a limit in an hour. These numbers are not exact, I’m too lazy to switch accounts and do other things to check these again, sorry.

And that is what makes this platform very good, in my opinion. This is so far the best experience of blogging I have. These things just make me realize that there are still so many things I need to learn and understand.

I Do Spam Follow

From some lines above I think you already know that I do spam follow. What do I consider as spam follow? When I don’t even read the content first, just blindly click the follow button. Why? because I want more for my blog. How does it work? a simple follow back. And it works! But this is also my biggest regret in blogging along with other of my spamming activities.

Now I have more than 2000 blogs in my subscription list. I barely use my reader feeds, it doesn’t work anymore. There are new posts every second. It becomes a distraction. I wish I didn’t do all the spam. I am really sorry for those who get my spam.

A proper apology requires three steps.

  • Step One – An admission of wrongdoing. Amy, I was wrong.
  • Step Two – A promise never to repeat said action. Amy, that action will never be repeated, and that’s a promise.
  • Step Three – An earnest request for forgiveness. Amy, I hope you can forgive me, and I hope you do it right now, ’cause there’s an Uber waiting downstairs, and I don’t want to repeat this apology nonsense with my driver Ganesh.

Quick Apologize 😁 Please Read – Important – Level 1 Alert ⚠️ – Need Help – Can’t Comment On Other Blog + Please Check Your Spam Folder

I have been trying to return your kindness by commenting on your blogs, but those comments are all gone for the past few days! I’ll try to count the numbers by the end of this post. If you received my Like, I may have dropped a comment also. I’m still trying to figure out the problem, but even I tried asking WordPress Support, and the Page not found! so I literally can do nothing, but to publish this post. Keep smiling, I am OK πŸ˜‚

Why Am I Apologizing

I am apologizing because people start leaving me (read: unfollow), so this post intended to prevent more number. Thanks to WordPress.com, I have learned a lot of things from a lot of people. I’ve been blogging for almost 6 months and I’ve done many things. Like, Comment, Follow, Unfollow, Spam Like, Spam Comment, Spam Like Comment, etc. Recently I tried my best not to do spam anymore.

Delayed Reply

I mostly delay my reply to your comment on this blog, I have reasons for it, one of them is limited number of notifications. I counted 100 notification items only, so the 101th notification item will be gone forever, I can’t revisit it. If I force “realtime” conversation it will definitely take all the notification slot. But I have been trying my best to reply all of them.

This creates another issue. My comment for other blogs, based on queue on my notification items also gone! I am Okay, keep smiling πŸ˜‚

Please consider this if you are going to leave, I’ll try my best to resolve the issues soon. In the near future I probably only leave a Like to return the kindness and I will let you know if things back to normal.

In the meantime, enjoy https://developer.wordpress.com/ . It’s open API provided by WordPress.com to create our own app with the power of WordPress.com. I’ve created some scripts based on this, I know who unfollowed me, I created tool to do spam likes (I don’t use it anymore). I tried to create my own notification storage so I won’t worry about notification slot anymore.

I will do one more spam like, just to get you notified and hopefully reading this post.

Spam πŸ– Annoying Comment πŸ˜

I’m starting to get and be spam from few days back. Spam is a brand of canned cooked… Sorry, wrong spam. Here we go – irrelevant or inappropriate messages sent on the Internet to a large number of recipients. But reality? Not so much, maybe because that description is referred to spam in general, but I’m going to talk about spam specifically for this platform, spam comment in my site or others.

When I tried to comment on my favorite blog, I can’t seem to add any comment, she said “Yuulye where did your comment vanish?”, and then I tried to add another comment, 2 or 3 times after that still no success, after a while I tried again and this time it worked! A few days passed she told me that my comments considered as spam by the system and she approved all of those! *annoyed*

Another case, I ask my friend to read my newest post, she seems insensitive until I need to ask (but she is cute). Well, she did visit my blog to read the post and then she commented, but I don’t get any notification. I tried asking her, “why didn’t you leave a comment?” “I did” she replied and I told her that there is no comment from her *sadface*.

I was thinking, my brain? I was wondering. A day later I saw her comment detected as spam. Why didn’t I check it before, I guess it needs two incidents to make me realize! After that I periodically try to check spam comment or comments for my site in general. But I still don’t know why some comments detected as spam.

Investigation

I search for this problem, I found a resource from WordPress.com support post titled Unwanted Comments and Comment Spam, there is a point in the article that says…

Are your comments incorrectly marked as spam? Please contact Akismet support and mention that Akismet is catching your comments by mistake.

So I went to the link…

⚠️ Want to get help even faster? Don’t forget that our Plus subscription includes priority email and chat support.

Okay, no thanks! Well it’s not really that important, really small number of comments that considered as spam and I can manually check it on the spam comment section. Boring? Let’s find something interesting.

But before that, additional info that your site using Akismet or not you can go to wp-admin, comment menu, spam list, if you have a spam, try checking the History. In the comment history you can see what happen to that comment.

akismet

There it is, my investigation, doesn’t really have any good outcome, but whatever…

Why it’s called Spam?

While some have suggested that this was because SPAM (as in the Hormel meat product) is sometimes satirized as β€œfake meat”, thus spam messages are β€œfake messages”, this potential origin, while plausible enough on the surface, turns out to be not correct at all.

The real origin of the term comes from a 1970 Monty Python’s Flying Circus skit. In this skit, all the restaurant’s menu items devolve into SPAM. When the waitress repeats the word SPAM, a group of Vikings in the corner sing β€œSPAM, SPAM, SPAM, SPAM, SPAM, SPAM, SPAM, SPAM, lovely SPAM! Wonderful SPAM!”, drowning out other conversation, until they are finally told to shut it.

For short, I decided to understand spam as annoying message, in this post case unwanted comment. I’m bored, sorry if this is not as interesting as I expected…

My Question

I recently had some blogger awards, and for some of those I need to ask questions, one of my question is “What does comment mean to you?”. I cringe myself for asking that question when I read the answers. So now I’ll try to answer the question myself.

For me, comment section is a tool, a tool provided by WordPress to do something powerful, as powerful as a post, I believe. The platform also give me a hint! I just didn’t understand it soon enough…

comment-hint

But as always, I often make mistakes with this, sometimes I didn’t read the post but rushing to give a comment just by seeing the title and the comment turns out to be hurtful, inappropriate or irrelevant. Then I found a way to change that, of course to read the post before comment and the other one is be mindful. The poem from Winnie is super good!

Annoying

I actually didn’t get annoyed so easily, probably because the years I’ve spent living, but I have to make an exception.*wink* I just make the title a little bit dramatic to attract more readers, hahaha, sorry. Is the title click-bait enough?

So for you the one who accidentally read this post, don’t worry if you have anything to say to me or the blog, say it on any comment section, I would be very happy to receive it, and if your comment doesn’t appear in the place it supposed to be you can blame the Akismet not me, don’t bully me, I’m really a sensitive person…

HTML in Comment

Do You know that You can use HTML in your WordPress comment? There are 14 elements You can use to prettify your comments. The elements are a, abbr, acronym, b, blockquote, cite, code, del, em, i, q, s, strike, and strong. Some of them might also have attribute(s) that can be modified.

<a>

The <a> tag defines a hyperlink, which is used to link from one page to another. The most important attribute of the <a> element is the href attribute, which indicates the link’s destination.

In WordPress comment, this element has 2 attributes that can be used they are href and title. Fill the href attribute with some kind of URL and title attribute with a related title Specifies extra information about an element (displayed as a tool tip) .

<abbr> & <acronym>

The <abbr> tag defines an abbreviation or an acronym, like “Mr.”, “Dec.”, “ASAP”, “ATM”.

Tip: An abbreviation and an acronym are both shortened versions of something else. Both are often represented as a series of letters.

Marking up abbreviations can give useful information to browsers, translation systems and search-engines.

The elements have one and only attribute that can be used for the comment and that is title. This attribute works the same behavior with <a> tag, when You hover it, the tool tip will show You content of the title. Those tags are similar, probably the same, but when You are writing your own HTML page You might want to use only abbr tag. because…

The <acronym> tag is not supported in HTML5. Use the <abbr> tag instead.

<b>, <strong>, <i> & <em>

These elements are Formatting elements. <b> similar with <strong>, <i> similar with <em>. <b> means bold, <strong> also bold but with added semantic “strong” importance. <i> means italic, <em> also italic but with added semantic importance.

Here is some examples of combination from the elements.

no format = no format.
<b>bold</b> <strong>strong</strong> = bold strong.
<i>italic</i> <em>em</em> = italic em.
This sentence is important but not as important as this.

<blockquote>, <q> & <cite>

A quotation is the repetition of one expression as part of another one, particularly when the quoted expression is well-known or explicitly attributed by citation to its original source, and it is indicated by (punctuated with) quotation marks.

Paragraph above is quoted from wikipedia. I use a special element to make the appearance different with other section. I use <blockquote>tag. <blockquote> and <q> tag are the same, the difference is <blockquote> used for a long quote, and <quote> for shorter version of quote. I personally use <blockquote> in a self paragraph, and <q> for quoting a sentence inside a paragraph.

Those two tags, has an attribute that can be filled. The attribute is called cite, it usually has a value of a URL which means Specifies the source of the quotation. The attribute can be a self tag called <cite>, I haven’t actually use it a lot, I just usually use the quoting tag directly, but for example most of my references is taken from w3schools.com.

<code>

I should love this element the most. This element is me, haha. The <code> tag is a phrase tag. It defines a piece of computer code. This element make a block of text pretty different, if we take a look at other elements, this is the only element that change the background.

This element has an inline display, so if You want to make the piece of code more visible You might want to add more spaces between before and after block.

<del>, <s> and <strike>

Last but not least, for a strike through decoration text we can use these elements. The only element that has attribute that can be modified is <del> element. The attribute is datetime, if You want a precise thing for you deletion thing, You can use this element with the attribute datetime even though the format is pretty hard to memorize YYYY-MM-DDThh:mm:ssTZD.

I don’t use this kind of element so much, but maybe if You are working in a project and need versioning, You can use these element to mark that something has changed. Or, just use it to make your text noticeable in the comments.

So, now is the time to try these elements in the comment. I haven’t tried much
but I might add a comment to this post after.
